Baragwanath Central Artworks

The artworks at Baragwanath Central were commissioned by the JPC as part of the upgrade of the area that included new roads, landscaping, paving and a park furnished with a children's playground.
Trace was appointed as the public art contractor and we were asked to use artists from the area.
Andile Krwetshe acting as our community liaison officer, established contact with artists and the local ward councillor. We then set up workshops using local schools as venues. We also made contact with school teachers from the area who nominated children to take part in separate workshops to generate images which we used on the fence surrounding the park.
Thus began the process of making four large-scale artworks, involving a final selection of six artists, many school children and an extended team of more than thirty people.

Artists who were involved in this project are:
The woman sculpture ( The Silence Breaker) is by Christopher Molefe
The book sculpture is by Daniel Nxumalo, Nduduzi Richard Ndlovu, Sibulele Ntintili & Hans Foster
The taxi sculpture is by Philani Mhlugu
The fence artwork is by grade 4,5 and 6 pupils from: Vulamazibuko primary school, J.S. Mpanza primary school, Khomanani primary school, Elitheni primary school, Ekuthuleni primary School & Inkwenkwezi primary school.
