Coming to the City Mosaic

COMING TO THE CITY: A Mosaic
Client: Comissioned by Nandos, UK.

Process: After the design was accepted by the client the mosaic was made in South Africa by a group of mosaic workers professionally trained by an Italian expert. It is then transported to London for installation.
Coming to the City is a depiction of various figures walking in an urban space. As happens in any big city they are from all over the world and some of them are shown as literally embodying their origins. The figures are all communicating- some obviously through their cell phones, some are wired to, even exemplify digital communication in the form of digital code (10101010) while others are thinking of their family and friends back home. Some wear the landscapes of home or have those landscapes in their bodies as tributaries of memory.
It is not a tourist depiction of London, but the city is indicated by the maps in the red background. The male and female black and white figures are shown walking on an archaeology of the city. The figure in the curve is an assemblage of many smaller figures, a kind of displaced community in one collective dancing effigy. There are many layers of meaning on the mosaic for those who are curious but it is also, I hope, a visually satisfying experience for those who just want that.
