Commuter Sculpture

Mild steel

This sculpture was commissioned by the Johannesburg Development Agency for a site at the Baragwanath Taxi Rank. It stands at the eastern entrance to the rank as a marker of its function. Many thousands of commuters move through the rank every day commuting to and from central Johannesburg. The rank gets its name from Baragwanath Hospital on the opposite side of the road. The sculpture is 4.5m high and is composed of intersecting laser cut maps and figures. The figures were drawn and photographed on site. The text layers refer to well-known parts of Soweto. The sculpture is made of mild steel and finished with linseed oil and powder coated elements.
