Alf Kumalo

Clive van den Berg, Curator and Designer

Soccerex - Sandton Convention Centre, South Africa
October 2008

The exhibition was commissioned the Gauteng Department of Arts and Culture for Soccerex, the international soccer trade fair.

Alf Kumalo has been capturing moments of South African history since the 1950ís. From the turmoil of the Soweto uprising to the proceedings of the Rivonia trial he has been there, watching and recording. He has documented the lives of many great South Africans including Nelson Mandela and Miriam Makeba, leaving an invaluable record of a crucial period in South African history.

Throughout his career sport has fascinated him and he has been taking photographs of soccer games since the late 1950's, amassing an archive of several thousand pictures. He has documented the changes the sport has undergone as the nation moved from an apartheid state with strictly segregated games for different races, to a fully integrated sport, represented at national level by Bafana Bafana.

This exhibition collects a fraction of his soccer pictures, covering some of the great moments of the game over almost six decades.
